Henry J. Altvater III

    Henry J. Altvater III (“Papa Medic”) of Milford, Pa., died on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, N.J. He was 72.

    Son of the late Henry J. Jr. and Virginia E. (Taylor) Altvater, he was born on March 28, 1943, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

    He was raised in Fairlawn and Tenafly, N.J., before moving to Milford. He was a former member of the Deleware Township and Bushkill Volunteer Ambulance squads.

    He was formerly employed as a baker at Tamiment Resorts before pursuing his passion to help people by becoming a paramedic. As a paramedic he was employed with Hudson Valley ALS, Pocono Medical Center, Elliots Ambulance Service, Township of Liberty, Pike County ALS, and Newton Memorial Hospital.

    Survivors include his beloved wife, Sophia (Hooftman) Altvater, of Milford; children, Erika Gostischa and her husband, Joseph, Krista Barlotta and her husband, Christopher, and Adam Altvater and his wife, Kendra, all of Milford; grandchildren, Adrian and Logan Gostischa, Kelsey and Emily Barlotta, and Holland Altvater.

    He was predeceased by one son, John Henry Altvater.

    Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, at Stroyan Funeral Home, 405 West Harford St., in Milford. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 8 p.m. on Jan. 29, with the Rev. Nestor Soto officiating.
