Joan E. Hughes

Joan E. Hughes, a 25-year resident of Tafton, Pa., died Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, at Allied Services Hospice Center, Scranton, Pa. She was 88.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years and the center of her world, Harold V. Hughes Jr., in 2006. Born Oct. 26, 1933, in the Bronx, N.Y., Joan was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Catherine (O’Brien) Diehl. Formerly of Deer Park, N.Y., she had worked at CVS in Hawley, Pa., and was a member of BVM Queen of Peace Roman Cathoic Church in Hawley, Pa. She also enjoyed volunteering for the Pike County Senior Center in Dingmans Ferry, Pa. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Hara and Rainey Hughes of Allentown, Pa.; daughters, Margie Hughes of Knoxville, Tenn., and Elizabeth Hughes of Tafton; and her grandson, Billy Hughes of Knoxville, Tenn. Joan was also preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Diehl, and a sister, Eileen Mittwoch. A Funeral Mass was held Dec. 17 at BVM Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Hawley, with the Rev. Richard W. Beck, Pastor, officiating.
