John S. Zaleskie
John S. Zaleskie of Monroe, N.Y., and a lifelong resident of the area, died on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, N.Y. He was 89.
Son of Stephen Zaleskie and Marion VanGelder Zaleskie, he was born in Goshen, N.Y., on Nov. 30, 1927.
He was a retired maintenance mechanic for Orange & Rockland Utilities in Haverstraw.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.
He also was a member of the American Legion Post #488 in Monroe, a life member of Disabled American Veterans Post #137 in Peekskill and was a former member of Mombasha Fire Company in Monroe.
Survivors include his son, John D. Zaleskie of Monroe; daughters, Kim E. Yunck and her fiance, Daniel Jones, of Newburgh, N.Y., and Stephanie J. Miller and her life partner, Mario Melchiorre, of Hawley, Pa.;, seven grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Joan L. Lynn Zaleskie.
Visitation will be held Feb. 9 at Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush Funeral Home in Monroe.
A graveside service and interment of cremains will take place at Seamanville Cemetery in Monroe at a later date.
His family's statement reads: “After a long battle with multiple lung diseases, John S. Zaleskie finally succumbed to them. His presence was felt by all in a positive and loving way. His lust for life was like no other. He will be dearly missed by family and friends.”
