GAIT Therapeutic Riding Center’s long-time beloved volunteer Syril Overpeck passed away suddenly and peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 21.

She started volunteering at GAIT TRC in 2007. She performed many essential tasks at GAIT, including mucking the stalls and pastures, side-walking with riders, grooming and leading horses during lessons. Martha Dubensky commented that Syril was also an essential part of the annual Camp LeeMar program at GAIT for children with special needs. “She will be very much missed at GAIT," she said.

In addition to being a dedicated volunteer, Syril was also an accomplished artist. Everyone who has visited GAIT is familiar with the beautiful paintings Syril made of the GAIT horses including the late Tiger and Laura. Syril was also accepted into the Juilliard School of Music and played several instruments, including the cello.

Syril is survived by her cousin Geri Leiter, who had this to say:

“To the wonderful people at GAIT, Words cannot express my gratitude for the joy you brought to Syril’s life. How she loved each one of you and found fulfillment surrounded by the horses she adored. She was proud to be part of an organization whose focus is to reach out to children who face challenges. As you know, Syril had a heart too big to measure. Exceptionally gifted in music, art, and with an incredible mind, she will be greatly missed. May her laugh, that could fill a room, be forever in your memory. With a world of thanks, Ms. Geri Leiter.”

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that donations be made to GAIT Therapeutic Riding Center, 314 Foster Hill Road, Milford, PA 18337.
