Volunteer literacy tutors honored
HAWLEY More than 30 Volunteers were recognized for their tutoring hours and service at the Annual Tutor Recognition Luncheon held on Sept. 14 at Woodloch Springs. Certificates totaling 11,800 hours were presented to volunteers for their hours and service given to adults seeking to improve their reading skills in our communities. Carol Rick, of Greeley, received the “Tutor of the Year Award ”. Carol has given 750 hours of dedicated service to her student and the community. Last year Carol’s student received “Student of the Year” Award. Special recognition was given to Annette Petry of Shohola, dedicated volunteer tutor since 1999 who has given 2,000 hours of service alone. The Adult Literacy Program provides tutoring free of charge to adult residents of Pike and Wayne counties seeking help with their reading, writing and math skills. The volunteers tutor “one on one” teaching English to foreign born and tutoring those wishing to attain the equivalent of a high school diploma (GED).
