A day for Old Glory

| 29 Sep 2011 | 03:25

Sunday, June 14 is Flag Day. The day commemorates the adoption of the US flag by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it in 1916, and National Flag Day was established by Congress in 1949. Still unrecognized as an official federal holiday, Pennsylvania is the only state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday, declaring it as such in 1937. Pictured here, “Dawns Early Light” was captured by photographer Thom O’Connor, whose work will be shown at the Highlands Photographic Guild through July 5, in his show called “The Golden Hour.” O’Connor explained that, “For photographers, the golden hours are usually just at dawn and dusk. The light is warm and glowing, and the sun’s low angle in the sky produces long, intriguing shadows.” An opening reception will be held Saturday, June 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. For more information call 570-296-2440 or visit www.highlandsphotoguild.com .
