Milford - Most of us in AARP Chapter 3455 were born before 1945. We were born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, plastic, contact lenses, the pill, radar, credit cards, ballpoint pens, panty hose, dishwashers, computer dating, FM, tape decks, artificial hearts and microwaves. Considering all the changes we have experienced plus wars, conflicts, police actions and operation freedom, we have been witnesses to a lot but we have also learned to share...to give back...to volunteer...to serve rather than be served. At our Nov. 18 meeting at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall in Milford, President Martyn Freed gave, from the chapter, a donation check to representatives of eleven local worthy charities. The money for these checks was raised by the members during the year from various activities. These charities and their representatives were: Katherine Ruzanski of the Ecumenical Food Pantry; Michael Donlon for the Holy Trinity Food Pantry. the Pike County Development Center and for Habitat for Humanity of Pike County; Ann Gillerhane for the Center for Developmental Disabilities of Pike County; Barry Heim of Pike County Humane Society; Wendy Luhrs of People Helping People of St. Patrick’s Church; Catherine Hansen of the Pike County Public Library; Peggy Emanuel of Survivors Resources, and Martha Dubinsky for G.A.I.T. A check was later sent to Chris Flynn (who was unable to make the meeting) for the American Cancer Center Pike Unit. In other news the Pike County Senior Center in Blooming Grove is in desperate need of volunteers to deliver home bound meals. If you can help even one day a week call 570-775-5550. Also remember that the Festival of Lights will be held on Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. on the lawn of the library in Milford. There will be music and refreshments and it is free. And we are in desperate need of lap robes which will be given to veterans and other people in nursing homes for Christmas. If you have made lap robes which you have been unable to deliver please call Ethel Musselwhite at 570-296-6545 to arrange a delivery in time for the Christmas distribution. There will not be a meeting in December due to having the Christmas party. Our next meeting will be held at St. Patrick’s on Friday, Jan 20 at 1 p.m. In the event of snow and schools are closed, the meeting will be held on the following Friday. The January meeting is a finger food luncheon. Please bring food which is easily eaten by hand such as wings, pinwheel sandwiches, deviled eggs, cakes etc. For information on joining AARP call Beth Stickle at 570-828-7984. The date for our Christmas Party is Dec. 8, which will be held at Mt. Haven at 12 noon. The cost is $21 per person. You can call Mary Hoffmann at 570-296-6553 for more information.
