An Acre of Hope

MILFORD The much-talked-about Santos Farm property is a reminder of a gentler, more self-reliant time. This 120-acre property, divided by the three-lane highway with its concatenation of cars whizzing by, is being divided into three parcels for sale; a 20-acre parcel, a seven-acre parcel and 93-acre parcel. But there is one little acre that is not for sale, because it is owned by Dr. Richard A. Dubensky, our local veterinarian, who worked with the animals on the Santos Farm for more than 20 years. On this acre, Dr. Dubensky has planted a beautiful orchard of apple trees, peach trees, and pear trees. Here he raises his bees for honey. He has planted this Orchard as a living memorial to the Santos Farm. The fruit of this orchard is to benefit the riders, families, horses, and members of the community that have supported GAIT (Genuine Alternative In Therapy). GAIT is a not-for-profit organization which provides therapeutic riding to children and adults in the tri-state area. GAIT changes lives and improves the quality of life for its riders. The fact that this Orchard for GAIT is on part of what was the original Santos Farm property is a living tribute to the quality of life on the farm and the hope that the fruit of this orchard will provide for the support of GAIT. The Santos Farm was bought in 1941 by Julio Santos (Sr) who operated it as a dairy farm until 1969. Santos Sr. was proud of the fact that that he produced everything for his family’s needs on the farm. He rarely went to the grocery store, and then only for some flour, coffee, ginger ale, and salt and sugar. There were cows on the Santos farm until four years ago. It now produces just corn and hay. Julio Santos, Jr and his wife, Dolly, now operate the farm and for them it is a loving symbol of days gone by. The 21st century is scurrying by, Pike County is experiencing yet another growth spurt, and progress is galloping inlike it or not. The Santos Farm will be sold. But this beautiful Orchard for GAIT will remain as a reminder of a lifestyle that has all but disappeared from our area.
