Bad financial management is a real crime on your pocketbook

MILFORD He used to catch bad guys as a detective and now he educates good guys in ways to manage their income and save for the future. Charles Lutz, regional vice-president for Primerica Financial Services has been doing this for about 15 years. He started part-time when he was a New York City police officer living on Long Island with his wife and four children. He saw a need in the Milford area for services such as he provides and felt he would be successful at filling this void. He opened the 203 West Harford Street office in last October. “I help families become debt-free and financially independent. I am more interested in building relationships rather than making sales,” said Lutz. Lutz’ services are free as he gets paid by the investment companies he works with. He provides services in budgeting, debt consolidation, college planning, conventional mortgages, life insurance, Roth IRA’s, annuities, and long term care insurance. Lutz is not an accountant or tax preparer. Lutz counsels middle class area residents from young marrieds and singles to those nearing retirement and he does this for free. In a period of economic instability, Lutz says a lot of people have gotten into trouble with bad counseling or no counseling. “People aren’t getting good advice regarding their finances and so they are afraid to try anything.” The situation has produced fear and indecision. “They’re scared to make a mistake. Most people know they have to save for the future but they don’t know where to go to get help in this area and are leery of those that offer help. I give then free information about all these things and I don’t try to sell them anything. I educate them. Once they see that I am not a high pressure salesman, the relationship begins. Right now I have more business than I can handle and want to hire local area residents to assist me both full- and part-time,” he said.
