Books, computers and compassion

MILFORD — Books N Stuff 2—a new venture in Milford’s Old Lumberyard Shops, is a used book store offering Wi-Fi and internet services, including computer training. But there’s more to it than that: in a win-win scenario the shop owner - Laura-the-Media Lady - has partnered with the Pike County Humane Society to raise up to $5,000 for the shelter. “For every book they [the Humane Society] collect for me, I give $2 back for a hardcover and $1 back for a paperback,” she explained. While a customer can receive in-store credit for books brought into the shop, anyone wishing to benefit both the shop and shelter animals can donate their books to the Pike County Humane Society. Already, the shop has given back close to two-thousand dollars to benefit the shelter. But it’s not just books: at Books N Stuff 2, a computer user can purchase blocks of internet time, and a monthly membership is available for more frequent use. Wi-Fi is free for those who have lap-tops, IPods, or Ipads but in keeping with the philanthropic tone in the shop - a one-dollar donation to the PCHS is suggested. As stated in the shop’s written internet policy: “Donation jars will be at our counter and we will thank you many times over for your donation.” The store also offers book club meetings, and a children’s activity corner, making it easier for parents to shop. — Linda Fields
