Milford - Fire services in East Hancock, Miss. were wiped out by Hurricane Katrina. Several members of the Milford Volunteer Fire Department will be leaving May 31 to bring donated fire equipment to departments in Mississippi that were devastated by the hurricane. Fire stations, apparatus and equipment all were lost by many departments. The Milford Fire Department has linked up with one such department, East Hancock Fire Rescue in Waveland, Miss. and has been collecting donations of money and fire equipment. Milford and Central Fire Department, both in Pike County, have each forwarded more than $1000 directly to East Hancock. Other departments throughout the area have joined in the relief effort. The team going to Mississippi is looking for sponsorship or donations to cover the expenses of transportation and lodging. A trailer has already been offered by Cedar Ridge RV in Branchville, N.J., to use for transporting the equipment. Anyone wishing to help, please send donations to Milford Fire Department clearly marked “Katrina Relief Effort.” Any funds not needed for transportation costs will go directly to East Hancock Fire Rescue to help their community. Any fire department with surplus equipment to donate, please contact Eric Langberg at the Milford Fire Department at 570-296-6121 or 570-296-0493.
