Burns Scholarship 5K run/walk coming up

MILFORD It’s time for the sixth annual James C. Burns III Memorial 5K Run/Walk. Jeld in Milford, this event is to benefit the James C. Burns III Memorial Scholarship. Burns was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 71 in Milford, who passed away in June 2001 while on a rafting trip with his troop. In his memory, a scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving high school senior who is a Boy Scout, Girl Scout, Venture Scout, or Explorer, to help the student further their education. The 5K Run/Walk is USA Track & Field sanctioned. The program also includes a Kids K. In addition to the Burns Scholarship, this year’s event will once again benefit The Wounded Warrior Project, which assists our military men and women who have been injured in conflicts around the world. The 5K Run/Walk (3.1 miles) is a USA Track & Field-sanctioned and officially timed course through the streets of Milford Borough. The course begins and ends at the Milford Baseball Park. There will be water stops and volunteers at each mile marker calling out split times. Per USATF guidelines for our event insurance, dogs, skateboards, rollerblades, bikes, and headphones are not permitted on the course. Strollers are permitted if the participant does not impede other runners/walkers. The “Kids K” is for ages 10 & under, is approximately a 1K run around the block in town. Parents must supervise young children. Awards will go to:: First place overall male & female finishers First, second, & third place male & female finishers in the following age categories: 14 & under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+ First place Kids K finishers and participation awards The first 100 registered 5K participants will receive a commerative long-sleeve T-shirt. Kids K participants will receive a water bottle. Refreshments and continental breakfast will follow the race. Entry fees are: $18 (early registration) and $22 for adults, $12 (early) and $15 for student and senior (65+), and $5 for the Kids K. Sign Up Online at SignMeUpSports.com. It’s free.
