April 29 marks the Waterwheel Café, Bakery & Bar’s 35th anniversary. The Café is named for the huge waterwheel in the landmark Upper Mill, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

After working many years at Jean Paul Picot’s French Bakery and La Boulangère in New York City, owner Nancie Simonet originally opened as a bakery and self-service lunch café. The business soon evolved into a full-menu restaurant, serving breakfast and lunch, with dinners on Thursdays, Friday and Saturday evenings.

In 1997, the Café took over the wheelwright’s room in the Upper Mill building and opened a bar and dining area. This venue features original stone walls and a view of the 24-foot working waterwheel. Later, after spending over a decade in France, Darren Fouse joined Simonet at the Waterwheel. They have earned recognition from the Times-Herald Record, The Pocono Record, Washington Post, New York Magazine, The New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Bon Appetit Magazine, Travel+Leisure Magazine and more.

In addition to featuring live music, the Waterwheel also serves the community by donating their time, space, and food to many local charity events.

Waterwheel Café is currently open Wednesdays through Sundays, serving breakfast from 9 to 11:30 a.m., lunch with daily specials from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and dinner Thursday through Saturday evenings from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Customers have the option of dining in the bar or the café area. Weather permitting there is outside dining on the deck overlooking the Sawkill Creek.
