Competitive CPR for DV health occupations students

WESTFALL In ten minutes time, a group of students provide a presentation on what the average person can do in four minutes to save a life: cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Seniors Katie Goetz and Chelsea Grompone and junior Kevin Bunting are in the Delaware Valley High School Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) level II class. They have been working since October on a CPR presentation that soon will change from a class assignment to an entry in the Pa. HOSA State Competition on Apr. 21. The presentation on the importance of CPR was required to be pertinent to “community awareness,” and is comprised of information the students learned in the elective vo-tech HOSA class taught by Susan Briggs. Group members discuss how to perform CPR and why people are hesitant to do so, before demonstrating the act on a dummy. In January, Goetz, Grompone and Bunting began giving the presentation at local meetings, including the Milford Rotary, Port Jervis Rotary, Matamoras Fire Department, Milford Fire Department, DVHS faculty, Pike County Commissioners, Builders Association and Matamoras Borough Council. According to Goetz, the trio has received positive feedback from those who view the presentation, and are often asked a number of questions. She said that photos taken at each presentation will be grouped into a photo album that she and her teammates will present to judges at the upcoming state competition.
