June 26, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Haven MILFORD — Conashaugh Lake resident Mark Contreras and his family have been battling ALS for the past two and a half years. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS, often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Approximately 1 out of 800 people are diagnosed with ALS each year. This means that someone you know at sometime in your life will be diagnosed with the disease. The cause of ALS is not completely understood and the life expectancy is between 2 to 5 years. There is no cure for ALS and persons with advanced ALS face significant medical costs as the need for home health care is paramount. Mark has been an active member of the Pike County community for over 35 years. Originally from New York City, Mark officially moved to Pike County in 1979. Mark has lived in Dingmans Ferry, Milford, and most recently Conashaugh Lake. He worked as a custodian for the DV school system prior to being diagnosed. He remains active in the community through his church, St. Vincent’s DePaul, and the several organizations he is a member of. He was recently honored by the Knights’ of Columbus, receiving their highest degree of Knighthood. Unfortunately, the disease has progressed significantly over the past few weeks and Mark’s condition has deteriorated. He has been residing with his mother in Milford for the past two months, where he has chosen to spend his remaining days. Mark is a bright light of determination, hope, courage, and strength to the members of his family and the myriad of friends throughout the community. He treasures the warm thoughts, selfless acts of service, and uplifting visits from all who have come to help or just be present. Mark encourages all of his friends to come to share a laugh and a quality visit if they have the opportunity. They are dear to his heart. Visits or donations can be made at, 181 Schocopee Road, Milford, PA 18337 or by calling 570-296-7376. On Sunday, June 28, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Haven please join Mark and his family as they continue to battle ALS. There will be a fundraiser and a gathering of friends and family.
