Cop stops bridge jumper
Port Jervis, N.Y. Police say that a Port Jervis officer prevented an apparent suicide attempt at the Matamoras-Port Jervis Bridge on Saturday afternoon. On May 2, at 3:33 p.m., Port Jervis Officer Robert Card was summonded by passing motorists while on a traffic stop that there was a despondent acting male on the Delaware River bridge. Card responded to the bridge and located a twenty-two year-old man, whose name was not released. The despondent man was leaning over the bridge railing, at one point with both feet off the ground, according to Port Jervis Chief William Worden. Card made several attempts to talk with the individual, without success. As the man made indications that he was proceeding to jump, the officer grabbed the subject by the arm at which time, the subject proceeded to pull his leg over the railing resulting in a physical struggle to prevent him from jumping. Card eventually was able to subdue the subject and transport him to Bon Secours Community Hospital for an evaluation. Worden credited citizens and the quick actions of the police officer with preventing this individual from harming himself.
