MATAMORAS — The Kiwanis Club of Delaware Valley “Read Around the World” project was held during the last week of February with Kiwanis members reading the 2007-2008 PA Library One Book, “A Splendid Friend, Indeed!” to local children. These community and business leaders visited PA Pre-K Counts, Keystone STARS, and Early Intervention programs in the Delaware Valley School District. Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts provides free high quality pre-kindergarten education for 3 and 4 year olds, with a focus on children at risk of academic failure. The Delaware Valley partnership is currently developing an enrollment list for the 2008-2009 school year. For enrollment information, call the school district at 570-296-3137. Keystone STARS is a 4 level program proven to improve the quality of child care and offers parents a tool to gauge the quality of the programs they choose. Over 150 children aged 3 and 4 are provided service in Pike County Keystone STAR 2 and 3 sites. Early Intervention serves children from birth to age five with disabilities/developmental delays. Early Intervention builds upon the natural learning occurring in a child’s early years and promotes collaboration among parents, service providers, early childhood educators and others involved in the child’s life. For a free screening, call the Center for Developmental Disabilities at 570-296-3992. Read Around the World is a “Young Children: Priority One” Kiwanis International project. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. The Kiwanis Club of Delaware Valley meets weekly at the Cliff Park Inn at 12 noon on Wednesdays excepting the fourth Wednesday, when they meet at 6 p.m. For more information, contact Jim Montaperto at 570-296-5800 or via email at kiwanisdv@yahoo.com.
