Gilpin runs for Pike County treasurer

MILFORD - Acting Pike County Treasurer, John Gilpin of Greentown has announced his candidacy for Pike County Treasurer. Gilpin, a Republican, is a 43-year-old life-long Pike County resident and acting county treasurer since being appointed in November to fill the seat vacated by Mike Peifer. Gilpin made his decision to run for the office saying, “With 20 years in the customer service industry, I feel I can use this experience assisting the citizens of Pike County with the service and care they expect and deserve.” After attending Wallenpaupack High School he went on to Kutztown University where he majored in Business Management and Administration. In 1985, Gilpin went to work at First National Bank of Lake Ariel and then First National Bank of Pike County in both loan and investment areas. In 1987, he was offered the position of managing the Twin Rocks Restaurant in Hamlin and is now celebrating his 20th year of managing this popular family restaurant. In 2001, Gilpin was elected tax collector of Greene Township and won re-election again in 2005. “John is highly responsible and dedicated,” said Roseann VanWhy, Lehman Township tax collector of 30 years. He was voted president of the Pike County Tax Collector Association in 2002. Gilpin said that his campaign will focus on the importance of having extensive accounting experience and that the office must work across party lines with all other elected officials to ensure sound financial stewardship on behalf of the taxpayers. He says he greatly enjoyed his years working in public finance and looks forward to serving as treasurer where his experience will be put to good use for the county and its residents. Peifer says Gilpin is uniquely qualified for the position. “John Gilpin’s business background, experience as a tax collector and strong communication skills make him a natural fit for the treasurer’s office,” said Peifer. “As President of the Pike County Tax Collectors Association, he has proven his leadership skills in streamlining the collection and investment process.” Gilpin lives in Greene Township with his wife Barbara and two sons, 8 year-old Austin and 9 year-old Wade. He is an avid outdoorsman and is currently Rockport Hunting Club president. He is also a 22-year member of the Salem Lodge 330 in Hamlin and attends the Newfoundland Moravian Church with his family. Gilpin also serves on the board of directors for the Pike County United Way.
