Glass factory offers weekend tours and demonstrations

Port Jervis — Gillinder Glass Factory in Port Jervis is offering special tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9. Visitors will have a rare opportunity to watch an age-old art when Gillinder’s guest artist, Al Hough, transforms hot molten glass into hand-blown decorative pieces. Gillinder Brothers has been making glass since 1861 and still manufactures glass in the historic building it has occupied since 1912. Along with its own line of classic glass collectibles, Gillinder’s store features the works of over 85 other glass artists worldwide. Boasting the largest collection of glass art in the area, the store features glass made by a variety of techniques, including hand blown, hand pressed, stained glass, lampworking, dichroic glass, and hand-painted glass. Gillinder Glass is located off Exit 1 of I-84, in Port Jervis; follow the Gillinder Glass Museum signs. The factory store is open 7 days a week. Regular tour hours are Monday through Friday, 10:15 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. Factory store hours are Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Groups are welcome.
