MILFORD — Question: What noteworthy events occurred in 1953? The United States announced the development of the hydrogen bomb. The DNA molecule was discovered. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzig Norgay became the first men to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The first color television sets went on sale - for about $1,175 (about $9,250 in 2009 dollars.) And the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission opened the Milford-Montague Toll Bridge between Pike County and Sussex County, N.J. With state and local officials on hand Tuesday, July 21, the Commission officially rededicated the span — marking the completion of a $19.1 million bridge rehabilitation project that began in February . The rehabilitation project included the replacement of the bridge’s precast concrete deck panels; replacement of deteriorated supporting stringers and truss members; and blast-cleaning and painting of the entire steel superstructure. The project also included repairs or replacement of the Pennsylvania and New Jersey approaches, and installations of new sign-age installed on the bridge’s approaches. The old toll plaza was replaced with a new facility.
