Hold the plastic, please

MILFORD — Recycling plastic is one issue, but using it in signs in the borough’s historic district is another. Fern Lutfy and her tenant, Rocky Meloi, came before the borough’s architectural review board Monday seeking to replace a sign on her 406 Broad Street office building. They wanted to replace an overhead sign which had been in place for more than 30 years, but didn’t comply with zoning setbacks. It has already been removed. They planned a relocated sign of vinyl and plastic materials. While board members agreed with Meloi that the modern materials probably would last longer and look better, they said historically accurate materials, wood, must be used. Member Don Quick said the panel plans to review the ordinance treatment of adaptive reuses, but felt the board was likely to retain wooden signs. Lutfy and Meloi’s amended request, for a wooden sign, was approved.
