GLEN SPEY, N.Y. — The Green Power Alliance of the Homestead School in Glen Spey, NY spent four days on a fact finding tour of the coalfields of West Virginia, Apr. 6-9. Thirteen students and twelve adults visited coal preparation facilities, underground mines, and the headquarters of several WV environmental groups. Miners and citizens alike responded to interview questions and offered incredible stories and insights regarding the impact of our energy demand upon the land and culture of Appalachia. Pictured here are the students on the edge of an active 8,000-acre mountaintop removal site. Four West Virginians will return the visit to speak at the Green Power Alliance’s Energy Expo, Symposium and Film Festival entitled “Your Coal Connection” at the Pocono Environmental Education Center in Dingmans Ferry, May 3rd from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Award winning filmmaker, Jeff Barrie, will fly in from Nashville to join the symposium and to introduce his acclaimed documentary, “Kilowatt Ours.“
