MILFORD — Mark Horner, a dynamic Milford resident, has just opened his innovative new restaurant on East Harford Street where he is introducing thin crust pizza and Hero sandwiches on a chibbata roll to our area. “How do you get “Hornetti’s“ from” Horner?” we wanted to know. “It’s a name people always called me as a child growing up with an Italian mother and a father who was German, English, Irish, and Italian. “Hornetti” was really the context of my growing up. I learned Italian cooking at home, basically from my mom. ” Mark Horner also brings a strong restaurateur background to Hornetti’s, having managed a thriving Italian restaurant in New York for many years. Hornetti’s now is his own special creation, combining interesting Italian take-out and fine restaurant-quality entrees (veal piccata, shrimp francese, etc.) at take- out prices. According to Horner, his special thin crust pizza is thinner than the average pizza crust and is made with special ingredients from a 60-year-old family recipe . Another Hornetti original is Mark‘s ½ lb. “Burger Hero” with cheese or bacon on a chibbata roll. The chibbata roll is almost square, six inches long and four inches wide. It’s totally unique and Mark has a baker down in Jersey who makes these fresh every day. In addition to their pizza (with more than 15 choices of toppings), hot and cold heroes, burgers and (Nathan’s grilled) hot dogs , Hornetti’s offer’s salads, pasta, veal, chicken and shrimp prepared in a variety of Italian styles (parmesan, piccata, marsala, francese, marinara, alfredo, and scampi). All of these are for take-out. There is a fenced outdoor dining area, complete with an herb garden, where there will be outdoor dining if and when spring ever comes. Mark also has plans for bagels and breakfast to go, as well as a catering service complete with wait staff in the future—so you can be a guest at your own party. The official Chamber of Commerce grand opening of this unique restaurant will probably be in late February or early March. In the meantime, people are knocking at the door and word of mouth has already spread so that repeat business has already begun. Word of mouth is indeed very tasty.
