MILFORD - Leadership Pike’s second class gathered last month at the Delaware Valley School District Administration Building for its first session of the six-month leadership program. This year’s class consists of 10 area professionals from a variety of backgrounds and local businesses. Leadership Pike is a collaboration between Northampton Community College, Pike County Chamber of Commerce, Delaware Valley School District and Penn State Cooperative Extension. During their first session, the students learned the philosophy behind the Leadership Pike program and its goals and objectives - helping to foster and nurture leadership and team-building skills in today’s workforce. Penn State Cooperative Extension Community Development Educator Joann Kowalski presented the first program, “What is Leadership?” During this very informative session, Kowalski described the leadership challenge, what constitutes citizen leaders and steps to better citizenship. The students described the characteristics of an individual that they considered a leader, as well as looking at their personal leadership philosophy. In the afternoon, the students learned some of the factors influencing Pike County’s growth and development, as well as the history of Pike County from local historical societies. Leadership Pike 2007 will continue through October, 2007 and culminate with a group graduation in November. For more information on Leadership Pike, contact the Penn State.
