Lehman recognizes Martin Luther King Day
Bushkill Mike Meachem, president of the newly formed Pike County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), said that he and the organization were overjoyed to hear that Lehman Township Supervisor, John Sivick, had recently agreed that the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009 would be acknowledged and celebrated by the township, and that all local stores, restaurants and bars would be closed on that day as a mark of respect. “I applaud John Sivick for standing up to the rest of the Republican Party in Pike County and insisting that the memory of Dr. King be publicly supported,” said Meachem, “Supervisor Sivick has always been a good friend and has bent over backwards to help the community, especially commuters.” Meachem went on to remind the public that it was John Sivick who recently led the way forward in the township’s purchase of property on state Route 2001 for a park & ride for those commuting to New York City. “John recognizes all the contributions that commuters, especially African Americans, have made to Lehman Township, and has always supported using the tax dollars we give to enhance our quality of life”. Meachem said that he would continue to work with Supervisor Sivick and the other Lehman Township Supervisors on a number of important projects including turning the Lehman Community Park into a Park & Ride for Saw Creek residents and the establishment of a NAACP office in the Highland Village project as part of the deal that the township had made with the Wolfington Group of Companies. Meachem reminded voters that the group could not formally endorse a candidate for public office. “But if we could it would be Sivick,” said Meachem.
