BEACH LAKE, Pa. — Since 1980, there have been 68 drownings on the Upper Delaware River. but nobody has ever drowned wearing a properly fitted life jacket.
Whether you are a local school, business, or community organization, everyone can help spread the word that wearing a life jacket can save your life.
“Wearing a properly fitted life jacket when on the Delaware River or any body of water whether fishing, boating, swimming, or floating is the most important thing that residents and visitors can do to make their trip both fun and safe,” said Superintendent Kris Heister of the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River. “The Upper Delaware community plays a critical role as our partner in increasing awareness about the importance of wearing a life jacket when you are on the river.”
Keep in mind:
By law, all children 12 and under must wear a life jacket while on the river in any vessel, including inner tubes.
Every person in a boat or using an inner tube must have a life jacket within reach, not tied to the vessel.
Each person's life jacket must be the proper size and in good condition.
It's smart to wear a life jacket-while boating, tubing, fishing, wading, or swimming. The National Park Service recommends that you always wear it when you're on or in the water.
And remember, cell phones may not work along the river.
