Aspiring engineer recognized by university's art department
DINGMANS FERRY — Dingman-Delaware Middle School student Dustin Hassenmayer admits he’s more focused on his engineering aspirations and playing tuba in the band than art. But that didn’t stop this debut artist from receiving recognition for creative excellence by the students and staff of the Marywood University Art Department in this year’s Scholastic Art Competition.
Hassenmayer was one of only five entrants awarded this honor, which included a small cash prize. His Rapunzel’s Tower sculpture began as a mathematical cylinder base.
“I’m not sure if I’ll take art classes in high school, though since I’d like to become a mechanical engineer, art would be helpful for things like building bridges," Dustin said.
The tower was exhibited at Marywood’s Mahady Gallery with other local winners, including classmate Nicholas Rabuano’s linoleum block print of a walrus. Both students are first year participants in the annual art competition.
Other DDMS students who received Honorable Mention are Haley Nantista, Trevor Harvey, Grace Anagnost, Cyara Dindiyal, Jong Hyun Jin, and Natalia Liszka.
