Cub Scouts graduate to Boy Scouts

DINGMANS FERRY — In February of each year, Cub Scouts celebrate the birth of Scouting by holding an annual Blue and Gold Banquet.

The banquet is a chance for Scouts, leaders, their families and the local community to celebrate the pack’s anniversary, thank Pack leaders and other adults who have helped in Scouting and award Scouts for their achievements they have earned. The banquet is also a time where rank advancements are recognized at all levels with the final advancement ceremony for the Webelos Scouts as they cross over from Cub Scouting to Boys Scouts.

This year, Cubmaster John Bedell, Cub Scout Pack 1003 of Dingmans Ferry, graduated six Webelos Scouts and transitioned these young men from Cub Scouts and into the ranks of Boys Scouts. The Scouts will join local Boy Scout Troop 174 of Dingmans Ferry.

Scoutmaster Jack DeGennaro was present with his Senior Patrol Leader to congratulate these Scouts and welcome them into the troop. DeGennaro honored each Scouts achievement by giving each of them their Boy Scouts neckerchief and handbook.

As the awards were completed, Scouts, leaders and families gathered together to eat and eye the desserts as the Pack held its annual Father/Son Cake Decorating Contest. Each father and son team was instructed to bake a cake without the help of the female members of the household. The cake had to be completely edible as Scouts used cake, brownies, cookies, rice crispy treats.

After a group of third-party judges looked at each cake and made their decisions, Cubmaster Bedell awarded father/son teams with certificates for winners in the following categories: best Cub Scout themed cake, most patriotic cake, most colorful cake, most oddly shaped cake, flattest cake, yummiest looking cake, most original cake, gooiest cake, most suitably named cake and the Grand Prize – Judge’s Choice cake.

Cub Scout Pack 1003 and Boy Scout Troop 174 are both located in Dingmans Ferry and are part of the Delaware River District of the Hudson Valley Council. The Delaware River District serves 1,520 youth through 65 units in the Counties of Orange and Sullivan in New York and Pike County in Pennsylvania.
