DDMS principal volunteers in March for Meals

Dingmans ferry — In an effort to serve the extended Dingmans community, James Mitchell, principal of the Dingman-Delaware Middle School, and teacher Robert Skibber volunteered with the Pike County Area Agency on Aging as they join with the 14th annual March for Meals. This month-long, nationwide campaign celebrates Meals on Wheels, which is vital to many homebound seniors.
“It was nice to be recognized by some familiar faces,” Mitchell said of the outreach. Many seniors who eat at the center recognized him as the host of the annual DDMS free Senior Citizen Dinner Theater each fall, and, in an additional surprise, two of the organization’s workers were former students. Skibber, who has helped with the Dinner Theater all 23 years of its existence, was also eager to participate.
Mitchell and Skibber interacted with a number of seniors who were at the center eating lunch and were involved in social activities. They also delivered hot meals to a number of homes in the Birchwood Lake Estates Development.
“We thought it would be good to participate, since it allows us to interact with our local seniors in yet another way,” Mitchell said. The principal is also planning to invite seniors to come to the DDMS spring theatre performance as well. “The more we can get our students to interact with our senior citizens, the better understanding they will get of each other,” he added.
In addition, the Pike County Area Agency on Aging is always looking for volunteers to help out and get involved. The program is specifically seeking an increase in donations and volunteers who can give their time.
Consider joining Mitchell and Skibber in their efforts to pay it forward by serving locally. “It is vital that members of our community volunteer their time to help our seniors. We will definitely do this again,” Mitchell commented. “Maybe again this month if we can, but if not, definitely next year. We want to help.”
