— Dingman Township has appointed James McLain town historian.
The supervisors, along with township solicitor John Klemeyer and secretary/treasurer Karen Kleist, discussed ways to interpret Dingman's rich history:
Exhibits — Display local artifacts and memorabilia in a glass case in the township chambers was one of the suggestions.
Old-timers — Reach out to some of the families who have been here a long time, in some cases more than 100 years, suggested Klemeyer. They may have passed down artifacts, books, documents, and other items that may help, he said.
Old houses — Digging into the history will require a lot of research, said supervisors' Chair Tom Mincer, who noted that old photographs and documents may be lying around in old houses, waiting to be discovered.
Editor's note: Karen Kleist sent the following email correcting the Courier's original article that mistakenly referred to McLain as the township's first historian:
"Sandy Leiser was the Township Historian for many decades prior to her passing several years ago. The Courier has done a tremendous disservice to Sandy and the Leiser family.
"As a matter of fact, it was even discussed during the meeting that Sandy Leiser's family was contacted first to see if they were interested in carrying on the tradition."
The Courier regrets the error.
