Fast-moving floodwater hits bridge under construction
POND EDDY — The Delaware River flooded the construction site at the Pond Eddy Bridge after a fast-moving storm struck the river valley on Saturday.
D.A. Collins Construction had already started the rock platform from the New York side, which for months has damned part of the river.
The force of the flooding washed some of the rocks downstream, but most stayed in place. All of the equipment was moved to safety on Saturday before the storm, said Steve Franchak, inspector-in-charge with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on Monday.
He said plans to start pouring concrete on the footer last Thursday would be set back, along with the rest of construction, for about a week.
Even so, the bridge construction project — happening right next to the old, 1903 bridge — is right on schedule and slated to open late 2018.
