For the love of swamps

Looking for a fun and fascinating day trip? Your local wetland may not come immediately to mind. But Shohola Marsh Reservoir is the perfect place to find adventure, and tranquility too. Get a close-up look at the myriad species of fish, birds — including bald eagles — and other wildlife not found as easily elsewhere. High water levels after the recent spring rains allow boats (electric motors or paddleboats only) access, for now, to the weedier precincts of the marsh. Paddle the channel that wends through the propagation area at the south end of the marsh and watch kingfishers and herons hunt for their lunch. The wetland was created to provide opportunities for anglers, who will find a bonanza of bluegill, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed, and yellow perch. (Photo by Pamela Chergotis)
