From blossoms to bottle, students learn how honey is made

— Students at Delaware Valley Elementary School recently got an up-close look into beekeeping.
Cherry Ridge Honey, owned and operated by James Mang — the Delaware Valley Elementary School Library/Media Specialist — displayed items involved in maintaining honey bees and showed students a live hive. From the flower blossoms to the bottle, students in all grades learned the steps involved in producing local honey.
Students in the fourth-grade classes of Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Genovese, Ms. Casey, and Mrs. Navitsky participated in a larger demonstration as they learned about the importance of honey bees in their science classes. They wore protective beekeeping clothing, saw what the insides of a hive and frames of bees would look like, and learned about the extraction of honey from the hive and honeycomb frames.
Cherry Ridge Honey will be working with Delaware Valley staff to sell honey as a fundraiser this fall.
