Garden club celebrates 75 beautiful years

MILFORD — The Milford Garden Club, founded on Oct. 4, 1937, will mark its 75th birthday on the very day it all began, and hopes the community will join the celebration.
The club is hosting a wine and cheese party from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, at Grey Towers. Milford Mayor “Bo” Fean will give a proclamation honoring the organization, and the garden club will thank their volunteers.
“The garden club was started to provide civic service and the beautification of Milford Borough," said club president Pam Leroy.
She said the garden club has 75 volunteers. Just this week they changed the summer plantings to fall plantings. On hand were about 15 members planting mums and displaying pumpkins in the baskets around town.
The garden club operates on a budget of between $10,000 and $11,000 yearly. Milford Borough used to contribute financial support to the garden club but those funds have dried up. They are fully self-supporting and raise funds by having a luncheon, a perennial plant sale, the “Secret Garden Tour," a mums sale, and also send Harford Street and Broad Street merchants requests for donations.
Leroy said 280 guests were invited, and they've already received acceptances from approximately 150.
The Milford Garden Club continues its work to make Milford Borough colorful and festive all year long, and to keep up the appeal that keeps tourists coming year after year.
