Holy Crepes rolls into Milford

Newly opened Holy Crepes eatery on Milford’s Broad Street fits right in with the town’s original French heritage. Owners/operators Elizabeth Muller and Georges Malaboche, who is French, both learned cooking from their parents; Georges in Normandy and Elizabeth from her Italian parents in New York — her mom often made crepes.

“We both love to cook, and when this became available, we decided to take the chance,” Muller recounted. The couple gutted the interiorof the building, added a new door and awning, and set up a little patio garden in the back, which adds to the French flair.

So far, their efforts have paid off. “We already have a lot of repeat customers, including many locals. People really seem to like it,” Muller declared.

When the Courier visited on a Sunday afternoon, a three generation family — grandma Madeleine Coppola, mom Gricel Vecchio and her 15-year-old daughter, Tara — were ordering crepes.

“I brought them here to try it, because it was so good!” Tara said, adding that she’d been there the day before with her boyfriend.

Local sources, local fans

The restaurant sources food locally, using Fretta’s sausage and local pears and apples.

Neither of the couple has experience in restaurants, but they’d gone to farmers markets in Hawley and Tunkhannock during previous summers, making crepes, and they were often asked where their restaurant was. So when the opportunity arose, they were ready to try. Georges’ French background admittedly helps. “People know they’re getting the authentic thing, and they like that,” Muller said.

Milford has been helpful and welcoming, she added: “We had no trouble with permits with either the borough or the Milford Architectural Review Board that had to approve the outside.” Holy Crepes is in the historic district and thus alterations have to go through the approval process. The restaurant is located at 224A Broad St., next door to Wells Fargo Bank. The phone number is 570-409-6060 and hours are Wed.-Sat., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sun., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For further information and the menu, go to facebook.com/HolyCrepes.
