1. Should kids be required to wear masks unless they show a medical exemption?

School board members are unable to answer any questions related to masks due to litigation.

2. Do you think kids are getting too much screen time at school? Explain.

I believe it is up to the parents to determine how much screen time is too much at school. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic screen time did increase, but DV families were very fortunate to be offered five days a week of in person education to limit that amount. If parents feel that their children are receiving too much screen time they can work with their child’s teacher and principal on the issue.

3. How can we bring peace back to our teachers and parents?

I believe that it starts by respecting each other and ensuring that we choose kindness. We expect our students and kids to respect each other but some adults in our community are attacking each other on social media. We don’t all have to agree, in fact that’s the beauty of a democracy. However, we should always treat each other with respect. Be fair, be respectful, be truthful, and above all—be kind.

4. How do we teach our kids what it means to be responsible members of the community?

My parents taught me at a young age to give back to the community. They showed me what it meant to help others, which I am teaching my children; it’s why I ran for office. Providing opportunities for children to participate in community service is essential. I see parents instilling these values in their children and the district encourages students to volunteer in the community.

5. Should schools stick to teaching the standard academic curriculum as it currently exists and leave the rest to parents?

I believe that education starts at home long before students walk through the doors of the DVSD. It is up to us to bridge the divide and work together with parents, collaborating so that we can provide the best possible education for all students. Education goes beyond reading and math, it encompasses art, music, career and technical education, ensuring that our students are prepared for whatever pathway they choose when they graduate.
