Man arrested following fatal shoot-out among Dingman neighbors

DINGMAN — Police arrested and charged the son of a man who was shot and killed in a fatal shoot-out among neighbors.
Pennsylvania State Police said that neighbors Howard McElnea, 78, and Jeffrey VanSlyke, 68, had an argument at McElnea’s Route 2001 residence on Nov. 2 that turned violent.
The dispute left McElnea shot and injured, and VanSlyke shot and killed. Police are calling the incident a “criminal homicide.”
A month later, police charged VanSlyke’s son, Adrian Khillawan, 43, with tampering with evidence and threatening McElnea’s family.
According to police, in the same general time period after VanSlyke was killed, Khillawan allegedly attempted to manipulate the firearm that was in his father’s hand and threatened McElnea and three other people. Police say Khillawan allegedly said, “I am going to kill you and you whole family” and pointed the muzzle of the firearm at the direction of the four people.
Police also accused Khillawan of allegedly tampering with VanSlyke’s firearm by moving it away from the crime scene, and removed several personal items from VanSlyke’s pockets as well.
During the course of a search warrant at Khillawan’s residence, police say Khillawan was allegedly found in possession of prescription drugs that he did not have proper labeling on the bottle, along with marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
On November 20, police filed five charges — aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, simple assault, tampering with physical evidence and drug possession — against Khillawan and put out a warrant for his arrest.
Then on December 1, Khillawan turned himself into the Blooming Grove state police station with his attorney, Eric Hamill. District Judge Alan Cooper arraigned Khillawan at the station and set a bail of $50,000.
Khillawan was sent to Pike County Jail after failing to post bail. He was ordered to have no contact with the four victims as a condition of his bail.
A preliminary hearing was scheduled before District Judge Alan Cooper for Wednesday, Dec. 13, at District Court in Shohola, as this paper goes to press.
