In February, Delaware Valley Elementary School students participated in a “Penny War” arranged by the DVES Special Area teachers. The friendly competition raised money for the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Pike County Humane Society.
Pre-K through grade five students worked with their mixed grade level House Teams to place coins in four containers for points. A penny in a team’s house container netted one point, while a nickel, dime or quarter in an opposing house container meant a deduction of the coin’s value from the point total.
At the end of the month, the Green House team was declared the winner, earning $421.64 for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
In addition to raising money for a good cause, students from the team will participate in a special STEAM activity and receive ice pops at the end of the year.
