Meeting to oppose gas plant on March 22

— A town hall meeting to discuss the Competitive Power Ventures power plant, a 650 MW gas plant about to be built in Wawayanda between Routes 17M, 6 and 84, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, at the Senior Center, Shannen Park, at 1918 Route 284, Slate Hill, N.Y.

According to the meeting organiziers, emissions would affect all living within a 50-mile radius, in Wawayanda, Middletown, Minisink, Otisville, Mt. Hope, Florida, Goshen, Warwick, Chester, Monroe, Harriman, and beyond. The project is paid for by taxpayer and ratepayer subsidies, with up to a 16 percent rate hike imposed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the Lower Hudson Valley to pay for this.

The resulting electricity would be sold in the wholesale market, not directly to local residents,
