Mittens for Kittens adoption event to support Jill's Ferals

MILFORD — It all started with six pairs of mittens made from discarded sweaters on an old sewing machine.
In November, Amy Eisenberg, who founded Mittens for Kittens in 2014, finished sewing the thousandth pair. The mittens are now sold in six locations in New York, New Jersey, and the project's home in Milford, Pa., where they'll be sold this Sunday at an adoption event.
Each pair is unique, handcrafted from shrunken wool sweaters, lined in fleece, and finished with vintage buttons. They come in a single size to fit an average-sized woman.
So why are they called Mittens for Kittens? A portion of each purchase supports feral cat TNR (trap neuter and release) projects across the tri-state area, including the Port Jervis, N.Y.-based Jill's Ferals, its original benefactor. Since starting her TNR work, Jill Wojtaszek has trapped and neutered hundreds of feral cats and domesticated dozens of others to become adoptable companion cats. Both women credit the compassion and caring of the tristate community with the success of their projects.
On Sunday, Dec. 17, the Milford Craft Show store, 120 East Harford St., Milford, Pa., will host an adoption event. For each pair of mittens sold, $10 will be donated to Jill's Ferals. Adoptable kittens will also be available from noon to 3 p.m., depending on weather.
