— When the students in Nicole Cafarella’s class began work on a unit discussing the pros and cons of immigration, sixth-grader Giulia Casagrande told the class that her mother was an immigrant from Brazil.

The stories in READ 180 are nonfiction works, but Mrs. Cafarella knew that students would learn so much more from a live guest talking about her personal struggles and challenges, and the cultural differences she faced when coming to live in the United States.

Giulia’s mom, Livia Cabral, did just that, with student response overwhelmingly positive.

"She was great because she told us where she came from and her culture and she brought us chocolate," said Patrick Moran, referring to a special Brazilian birthday treat known as "brigadeiro."
