Pike and Wayne libraries offer e-books

MILFORD — Did you know that more than 75 percent of the nation’s public libraries lend e-books? Nearly 60 percent of library card holders in the country say they do not know if their public library provides e-book lending.
This month, libraries in Pike and Wayne County join libraries across Pennsylvania to highlight their e-book collections in time for summer reading. Whether you’re looking for a travel book for an upcoming vacation or if you want to read while you catch some rays this summer, consider borrowing an e-book.
“Over half of Americans have a handheld device, either a tablet or e-reader,” says Rose Chiocchi, Executive Director of the Pike County Public Library. "However, that number is much higher for smartphones, which e-books can also be read on. The portable nature of e-books means that you can have a wide selection of titles at your fingertips wherever you are."
The convenience of e-books even affects the frequency with which people read: e-book borrowers read an average of 29 books a year, compared to an average of 23 for borrowers who read only print books.
E-books may also be the answer for parents looking to encourage their children to develop an interest in reading. Children, especially boys, who are reluctant readers tend to prefer reading on an e-reader over reading a print book, as e-readers are similar to the technology they use on a regular basis.
“Through providing e-lending services and tech assistance from staff, we hope to help our members develop their information literacy — a vital skill in today’s world,” says Molly Rodgers, System Administrator of the Wayne Library Alliance.
Available e-book resources from both libraries include OneClick Digital and Zinio (for e-magazines). Wayne Library cardholders also have use of Freading. All resources can be found on the library’s websites: www.PCPL.org and www.WayneLibraries.org.
