Pike League of Women Voters to study election reform
MILFORD — The Pike County League of Women Voters will hold a non-partisan study sesseion on election reform from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 2-5 at the Blooming Grove Firehouse, located on Route 739, between I-84 and Route 6.
The session, which is open to the public, will focus on a review and update of current election law, especially with regard to apportionment and redistricting, election procedures, registration requirements, alternatives to closed primaries, and alternatives to "winner take all" election systems.
“It is unusual for a local league to open this type of discussion to the public, but we feel that it is worthwhile to allow non-members to see and understand our work," said President Liz Forrest.
The Pike chapter will reach consensus on these issues in January, then convene with other League of Women Voters groups around the country to reach national consensus. The League will then act as a single body to effect change.
The topic is especially timely, the chapter says, given concern about this year's primaries and caucuses, interest in alternatives to Pennsylvania's closed primary system, and discussions about other ways to ensure responsive government.
The League never endorses political candidates or parties. Its mission is to study and reach consensus on local, state, and national issues, and then act to make the democratic process work more effectively.
