Libraries have moved far beyond being just book repositories. They’re agile institutions that serve real-life needs.

Libraries can power progress and elevate quality of life by fueling the five types of knowledge essential to success: basic literacy, information literacy, civic and social literacy, health literacy, and financial literacy.

The Pike County Public Library is participating in a statewide initiative, the Pennsylvania Forward Star Library Program, that places the spotlight on libraries and the important role they have in the lives of Pennsylvania citizens. The library will raise awareness of the offerings that help citizens improve their command of the five types of literacy that are essential to success throughout life as students, parents, employees, consumers, and citizens.

As part of the program, logos on library event flyers and marketing materials will identify which literacies the events support.

“We are very excited to take part in this program and bring this information to our community,” said Nicole Heyer, Dingman Township branch manager.

The Pike County Public Library has supported these five literacies from the beginning, offering programs and services such as story time for children, information literacy classes, and technology workshops. In 2019, the library started working toward becoming a Gold Star Library, an ongoing process that assures that all of its programs and services are aligned with the five literacies. As of February, the Pike library has received the Bronze Star and Silver Star in five out of the five essential literacies and is currently aiming for the Gold Star.

Visit your local library to take advantage of their exciting programs and events and become part of moving PA Forward! says Heyer.

About PA Forward
The Pennsylvania Library Association’s PA Forward | Pennsylvania Libraries initiative was conceived to give voice to what the library community already knows, and what other states throughout the nation are also recognizing: With the right support, libraries are ideally positioned to become the community centers of information, technology, and learning that will fuel educational and economic opportunity for all citizens.
The Pennsylvania Forward Star Library Program is part of the Pennsylvania Library Association’s 21st Century Literacies Initiative, PA Forward.
PA Forward encourages all Pennsylvania libraries to use cohesive branding and marketing tools to frame communications to key stakeholders – elected officials, community leaders, donors, patrons, board, Friends, and employees. Libraries use PA Forward’s five literacies as a guiding framework for setting service priorities, identifying potential community and funding partners, structuring strategic plans, and building well-rounded, multi-skilled boards.
