'The crusade against darkness'The Lions Club submitted the following statement outlining its history and mission:
"The Milford Lions Club has been in operation since 1952. Since its inception, the club has worked to provide service to the community as well as support for both State and International Lions projects.
"When individuals in the Milford area have experienced times of need, the Lions Club has quietly provided support. In most cases this aid is given with no desire for recognition of the source, but only as a manifestation of the dedication to the Lion's motto,'We Serve.'
"In addressing the 1925 Lions Convention, Helen Keller challenged the members of the organization 'to become knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.' Thus began the associations commitment to providing funding and other help to do research into the prevention of blindness, as well as providing services for those who are blind. The Lions are responsible for the creation of the SightFirst Program which runs internationally today.
"The Lions participate in service activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education and research; youth, work with the physically and mentally impaired, environmental issues, community welfare, and international understanding.
"In addition, our local chapter is responsible for the Holiday Lighting Project, which always included the familiar 'star' and 'cross' shining brightly over our beloved Milford."
