The Grotto closes its doors

MILFORD — One of Milford’s many fine restaurants closed its doors for the last time on Sunday, Sept. 11.
The Grotto Restaurant, serving visitors and residents alike with Chef Adam Haygood's eclectic, multicultural cuisine, had to close because the rigors were taking a toll on Haygood’s health.
“In order to be able to stand on my feet for the long hours working as a chef, sometimes for 12 to 14 hours a day every day, I had to start taking pain medication,” said Haygood. "But the side effect was, it was eating up my liver.”
He had staff working for him, but standing up all day is "not uncommon" in the restaurant business, he said. In the end, he was forced to make lifestyle changes because of medical problems.
He took a step back to consider his options.
“I could have hired someone to run it, but in the restaurant business, you really have to be present as the owner,” he said. “Otherwise, it’s not good.”
Haygood has been a chef for 25 years and is used to standing. But, he said, “I’m not 20 anymore.”
The Farmers Market on Sundays on Grotto’s yard was a big boost both to him, and to other area businesses like Key Food. Haygood was an integral part of the market, cooking outside for many customers. During his last day, many came to say goodbye and wish him well.
“Originally I grew up in the Bronx and Queens,” he said. Now he’s moving to Long Island.
“A friend found me a job managing a Hospitality and Valeting Service — not standing up,” he said.
He’s also looking for a new place to live, and a chance to start anew.
“Things are working out,” Haygood said.
