GOSHEN, N.Y. — Police have issued traffic citations to the two drivers and the driving school instructor involved in last year’s fatal Warwick car accident, which took the lives of three Goshen High School students.
The students, all 16 years old, were taking part in the school's summer driver education program on July 14, 2015 when a tractor-trailer struck their vehicle at the intersection of County Route 1A and County Route 41 (Union Corners Road and Blooms Corners Road) last July.
The three students in the backseat of the driver's ed car, Antonio Baglivo, Lucas O'Connor, and Paul Van Doran, were killed, shaking the Goshen community. The student driver at the time, Claudia Krebs; the driving school instructor, Julio Anglero, 60, of Middletown; and the truck driver, August Harlacher, 61, of Shohola, Pa., all survived.
Both Krebs and Anglero were cited for failure to yield the right of way, according to Warwick police Lt. Thomas Maslanka. Harlacher was issued a citation for speeding, traveling 58 mph in a 45 mph zone. All three individuals are due back in Town of Warwick Court on Sept. 6. According to Maslanka, after the year-long investigation, no criminal charges will be filed.
The driving school instructor and vehicle were from Decat Driving School Inc. in Middletown, N.Y., a driving school used by many Goshen students.
Intersection improvements
As a result of the accident, calls to improve the intersection increased, which Blooms Corners Road resident Alice McMechen described as a dangerous intersection and the site of speeding and numerous accidents. There is a flashing light at the intersection with one side flashing red and the other side flashing yellow.Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus announced two weeks after the crash that a traffic light and other improvements would be made at the busy four-way intersection.
According to Orange County Department of Public Works Commissioner Chris Viebrock, progress is being made on the reconstruction of the intersection, which is expected to be completed this fall.
