Worms, yuck!

Ann Connell’s Delaware Valley Elementary School fifth grade classes were making worm composts. Everyone was working in their groups to make a small and happy home for their tiny new friends.

Connell was asking everyone in her homeroom to bring something in for the composts. Her homeroom students were really lucky because they were the ones that were putting together the composts.

They were using large plastic jars to start making their composts. After that they put some dirt in each and every jar to make the worms feel like they were at home. They used some new dirt and some of the dirt that was in the container that the worms were in. Then they put a banana peel in everyone’s jar because a banana peel is a little moist.

After that they put a few egg shells in the jars for the worms. They did this because it made a cool place for the worms to hang out. Then they put some old newspaper scraps in the jars so they could climb over them and make a soft bedding if they wanted.

Then they put in a few dead leaves to make it really feel like home for the worms. Then the best part finally came. All of the kids got to put in 11 to 13 worms per each jar.

Finally after a few weeks the composts looked really different. Some of the jars started growing a plant in them. The banana peels were not there and the newspaper scraps were not there because they degraded.

In case you are wondering what happened to the worms, they are still alive and we let them out into the wild.

In the end everyone had a good time and learned a lot.
