Newton Memorial earns cancer accreditation

NEWTON, N.J. The Cancer Program at Newton Memorial Hospital recently received a three-year accreditation with commendation by The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. Newton Memorial has consistently received CoC accreditation every three years since 1980. This year marks the second consecutive year in which the Hospital received the accreditation “with commendation.” That means Newton Memorial has demonstrated a Commendation level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program, such as cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement. “By consistently receiving this accreditation with commendation, the community can be certain that Newton Memorial Hospital’s cancer treatment programs meet or exceed national benchmarks in quality care,” said Brian Newman, M.D., a general surgeon with Medical Surgical Specialty Group. Newton Memorial is one of slightly more than 1,400 cancer programs in the United States and Puerto Rico to earn CoC accreditation, which represents only 25 percent of all hospitals. This group of hospitals currently diagnose and/or treat 80 percent of newly diagnosed cancer patients each year, the CoC said.
