Our class loves candy colors

WESTFALL n Joyce Thiele’s second grade at Delaware Valley Elementary School had lots of fun taking a survey about candy colors. The survey was officially part of the Pennsylvania Statistics Poster Competition in which students had to create and submit a poster showing the statistics of their survey. Posters submitted to this competition were also forwarded on to a national statistics poster competition which was coordinated by the American Statistical Association. More information may be viewed by visiting www.amstat.org. What is a statistics poster? That’s something that these DVES second graders learned quite well through this class project. It is a display containing graphs that summarize data, provide different points of view, and answer some question (or questions) about the data. The poster’s subject matter was up to the students. However, a listing of the original data, a description of the method of collection, and the purpose of the experiment had to be taped to the back of the poster before mailing. Of course, the poster had to be the work of the students and had to be originally designed and created.
